Introduction of Haryana Promotion of Science Education (POSE) Scholarship Scheme: A Brief Insight

Many meritorious students in Haryana choose professional courses after Class 12 because they offer promising career opportunities. As a result, fewer students pursue pure science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. The Promotion of Science Education (POSE) Scholarship Scheme aims to encourage students to choose science education by providing financial support from the first year of their degree.

The scheme is administered by the Haryana State Council for Science, Innovation and Technology, which works under the Directorate of Science and Technology, Government of Haryana. Its main objective is to encourage meritorious students to pursue basic and natural sciences and support their academic progress towards higher education and research.

Selected students receive Rs. 4,000 per month during the first three years and Rs. 6,000 per month during the fourth and fifth years, where applicable. The scheme also provides a one-time research mentorship grant of up to Rs. 22,000. Students pursuing a five-year Integrated M.Sc. course can receive total financial support of approximately Rs. 3.10 lakh. The 2025-26 guidelines provided for 250 scholarships, with no family income limit.

Eligible first-year students pursuing B.Sc., BS, B.Stat., B.Math. or Integrated M.Sc. in one of the 22 approved science subjects can apply. They must meet the prescribed Class 12 marks criteria of at least 80% for the Haryana Board or 85% for other boards, along with the applicable Haryana schooling or residence requirements. Students admitted to IIT, IISER, ISI, NISER, DAE-CBS or IISc are exempt from the marks condition and receive first priority.

Students can apply online through the Har Chhatravratti portal during the application period announced by the Council each year. The 2025-26 application round closed on 18 January 2026, while the dates for 2026-27 are awaited. For assistance, students can contact the Council at 0172-2560309 or email pose.scholarship@gmail.com.

POSE scholars who later qualify for NET and pursue a Ph.D. in Haryana can explore the HSCST Fellowship Programme offered by the same Council. Students who do not qualify for POSE may check the State Merit Scholarship to UG/PG Students. CBSE state toppers can also explore fee support under the Haryana State Meritorious Incentives Scheme.

The Research Mentorship Grant Explained

  • A one-time grant to support a research project under a professor or research supervisor
  • Students can conduct the project at their own institution or at another university, institute or research laboratory in India or abroad
  • For projects in India, eligible travel, accommodation, equipment and consumable expenses are reimbursed within the prescribed grant limit
  • If the host institution already provides a stipend or travel grant, only the remaining eligible expenses are reimbursed
  • The grant is paid directly to the scholar after project completion and submission of the required claim documents

How the 250 Seats Are Filled

PriorityEligible Students
FirstStudents admitted to IIT, ISI, IISER, NISER, DAE-CBS or IISc
SecondStudents pursuing a 4-year BS or 5-year Integrated M.Sc. at a university or institute in Haryana
ThirdOther eligible students selected according to their Class 12 merit score

The merit score is calculated using the better marks in English or Hindi and the best three marks among Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. Students who studied Classes 11 and 12 at an eligible non-elite rural school receive 2% additional weightage. For example, a merit score of 90% becomes 92% after this weightage.

If two candidates have the same merit score, the selection rules give preference to girls, followed by the candidate with higher language marks and then the younger candidate.

How and When You Are Paid

  • The scholarship covers all 12 months of the year, generally from July to June
  • The amount is paid in two half-yearly instalments, linked to the semester schedule
  • The first instalment is released after selection, while subsequent payments depend on the previous semester’s results and continuation requirements
  • The scholarship is transferred directly to the student’s bank account through NEFT or RTGS
  • There is no family income limit under the scheme

Note: The 2025–26 guidelines specify these scholarship amounts and seat numbers. The Council may revise the terms or number of scholarships in a future round. Check the latest official notification before applying.
