Introduction of Maharashtra Mukhyamantri Gramin Pashudhan Udyojakta Yojana: A Brief Insight

Many small farmers in rural Maharashtra rear a cow or a few goats but lack the funds to turn livestock rearing into a steady source of income. Setting up sheds, purchasing equipment and good breeds, and arranging insurance all require money. The Mukhyamantri Gramin Pashudhan Udyojakta Yojana aims to help farmers overcome these financial barriers and establish their own livestock businesses.

The State Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved the scheme on 22 February 2026. The Government Resolution followed on 9 March 2026 under the Viksit Maharashtra 2047 programme. The Animal Husbandry Department, Government of Maharashtra, implements the scheme to promote dairy, poultry and other livestock activities as rural enterprises and help farmers increase their income.

Under this umbrella scheme, General category beneficiaries receive a 50% subsidy, while SC/ST beneficiaries receive a 75% subsidy. For example, a 5-cow dairy unit costing Rs. 11.35 lakh can receive a subsidy of up to Rs. 8.51 lakh for eligible SC/ST beneficiaries. The scheme also covers poultry farming, goat rearing, hatcheries, silage machinery, smart cattle collars and interest concessions on loans.

The scheme gives priority to marginal and small farmers, forest rights holders, educated unemployed youth and women self-help groups. It also provides special reservation for women and persons with disabilities. Applicants must meet the land requirements for their chosen project and provide proof of the required livestock-related training or experience.

Applicants will submit their applications online through the MahaDBT portal once the application window opens. The department will select beneficiaries through a random draw. Farmers who need assistance can contact their Taluka Animal Husbandry Officer or the District Deputy Commissioner of Animal Husbandry.

Farmers can also explore other government programmes to support their agricultural activities. The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana provides yearly income support to eligible farmers, while the PM Fasal Bima Yojana offers crop insurance. Women self-help groups seeking additional livelihood opportunities can also explore the NAMO Drone Didi Yojana.

Farmers, livestock rearers and others looking for agricultural assistance and welfare programmes can explore the available schemes on our Maharashtra Government Welfare Schemes List page.
