Introduction of LIC Bima Sakhi Yojana: A Brief Insight

Many women in villages and small towns want to earn an income but struggle to find flexible work close to home. At the same time, many families still need greater awareness of life insurance. The LIC Bima Sakhi Yojana addresses both needs by helping women build a career as insurance agents and serve people in their own communities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme on 9 December 2024 in Panipat, Haryana. Also known as the Mahila Career Agent (MCA) Scheme, it is implemented by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), a public sector insurer under the Ministry of Finance. The scheme aims to promote women’s financial independence and spread insurance awareness, with a goal of having at least one Bima Sakhi in every panchayat.

Under the scheme, eligible women receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 7,000 in the first year, Rs. 6,000 in the second year and Rs. 5,000 in the third year, along with commission on policies they sell. Graduate Bima Sakhis can also apply for the post of Apprentice Development Officer at LIC after completing five years as an agent, subject to the applicable eligibility conditions. As of July 2025, more than 2 lakh women had joined the programme.

Women aged 18 to 70 years who have passed at least Class 10 can apply, provided they meet the other eligibility conditions. Existing LIC agents, former agents seeking reappointment, and certain relatives of LIC agents, employees, Development Officers and Medical Examiners are not eligible.

Women can begin the application process online through LIC’s Bima Sakhi lead form or visit their nearest LIC branch for assistance. After submitting the form, eligible candidates must pass the IRDAI pre-recruitment examination, attend an interview and complete the required formalities before receiving their agency code and appointment.
